Headphones
Headphones are a pair of loudspeakers which are held close to the user’s ears which can be connected to a radio, CD player or a portable media device such as an MP3/MP4 Player. They can also be known as stereo phones or headsets. The small versions of headphones that fit in the users ears are called earphones or ear buds.
Supra-aural headphones are one type of headphone, they have pads that sit on the ears as opposed to around them. They were first used in the 1980’s and came as standard with personal stereos. This type of headphone are often lightweight and smaller than the old style circumaural headphones which increases noise reduction.
The most common type of headphone’s are the “In-Ear headphones” or ear buds as they are also known. Earphones are a much smaller set of headphones that are put directly on the ear canal. They are often the cheaper type of headphone and are more used due to their convenience and portability.
The down side to the in-ear headphones is that they have an inability to stop any outside noise so are often used at higher volumes to cancel out any outside noise, which some studies show can lead to hearing-loss. Since the 1990’s these have been commonly shipped with all sorts of music devices, taking over in popularity from the circumaural headphones.
